CHARLESTON, South Carolina (CNN) -- Magoline Hazelton is used to people driving by her home just to take a look. She's also known as the "house lady" by her fellow residents in North Charleston, South Carolina.

From the outside, Hazelton's home doesn't seem much different from the rest of the neighborhood. But there's one big difference. Her house is made from cargo shipping containers.

Using containers to build homes has increasingly become a trend in the past several years because it can be cheaper and faster than using traditional construction methods. There are also plenty of containers at most major ports.

About 18 million containers are used worldwide to transport a variety of everyday products, such as cars, toys and food. Because the United States imports more than it exports, many containers end up stacked at ports. Photo See one of the homes being built »

SG Blocks, a company whose name stands for safe and green blocks, has made a business from the container overflow.

Co-founder David Cross previously worked as a merchant marine and spent a lot of time at sea, dealing with shipping containers.

"As you're looking down the deck of the vessel, you see hundreds to thousands of containers perfectly configured," Cross said. "They were stacked nine high below deck, five or six high on deck, and I just kept seeing hotel after hotel on the deck of our ship." Video Watch how residents like living in the homes »

Cross also saw value in the strength of the material.

"The containers are designed for hostile dynamic life at sea ... capable of carrying 60,000 pounds. It just made imminent sense, that with minor modification, it could become a multi-family living system."

In 2003, Cross partnered with engineer Steve Armstrong to help bring the idea to fruition. A year later, Hazelton's house was built in South Carolina.

According to Cross, modifying containers into homes uses significantly less energy than melting them down.

"These containers weigh about 9,000 pounds, and it takes about 9,000 kilowatt hours of energy to melt down 9,000 pounds of steel," Cross said. "We modify that existing piece of steel with approximately 400 kilowatt hours of energy input. [That's a] 95 percent energy footprint reduction."

The energy saved by transforming a single container into a home, rather than melting it down, can power a standard 70-watt lightbulb for up to 15 years.

The time it takes to assemble a container home can vary, according to Cross. Hazelton's home took 10 weeks to build. Generally, SG Blocks has found that recycled homes cut construction time in half.

"Typical homes can take four to eight months [to build]," Cross said. "For container homes, it's usually two to four months."

According to Armstrong, who is president of SG Blocks, the cost of building a single family container home is comparable to a traditional home.

"But you get a steel home instead of a wood home," he said. "So, it's more durable and has a lower carbon footprint. It's also water resistant and termite resistant."

The construction becomes cheaper as you get into multi-family homes. According to Armstrong, multi-family mid-rise units cost 10 to 15 percent less than typical "stick frame" homes.

"That's a lot to do with speed and ease of construction," he said.

Companies around the world are using shipping containers as building materials to create offices, army barracks, dorms and even designer homes.

"[We] can make these look like anything you want. [We] can put a pretty dress on any skeleton," Armstrong said. "So, if you want it minimalistic, so you can see the container walls, we can do that. If you want stucco or brick or siding, [we] can do that as well."

While each container has its own roof, when multiple containers are put together side by side, there are gaps between the boxes. Therefore, a traditional roof is put on top of the entire home, providing additional safety in inclement weather.

"When the boxes are joined together, the gaps are sealed, so even if you lose your roof above, you'd have some protection," said Armstrong.

The second roof also provides another benefit. Hazelton finds she can't even hear the rain hitting her home when it's pouring outside.

iPhone users across the U.S. were disappointed Monday to learn that AT&T, the only operator in the country offering the iPhone, won't immediately support a couple of key new features in Apple's new 3.0 operating system that will be available starting next week. But AT&T says these features are coming.

On Monday, Apple announced at its Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco that it plans to finally add data tethering to the iPhone, which will turn the device into a wireless modem to connect laptops to 3G networks. It also announced that the new 3.0 version of the iPhone operating system will support multimedia messaging messaging.

These features have topped iPhone users' wish lists since the phone was launched two years ago. But millions of iPhone users in the U.S. will have to wait a little bit longer. That said, AT&T says the features are coming soon.

"We will be offering a tethering plan and MMS for the iPhone," Mark Siegel, AT&T's spokesman, said by phone. "But we haven't announced a date."

Siegel was short on details about when these features would be offered, which devices they would be offered on, and how much it plans to charge for the services. Siegel confirmed that the MMS functionality will be offered by the end of the summer, but he wouldn't give any indication as to when tethering will be added.

Apple currently supports two versions of the iPhone on its network: the original iPhone, which went on sale in 2007 and operates on AT&T's 2.5G EDGE network, and the iPhone 3G, which was introduced last summer and operates on the faster 3G network.

Starting next week, AT&T will get another version of the phone called the iPhone 3G S. This device will come in two flavors--a 16GB model that will cost $199 with a two year contract and a 32GB model that will cost $299 with a two year contract. AT&T and Apple will also continue to sell the 8GB iPhone 3G announced last year for $99 with a two year contract. Older 16GB iPhone 3Gs will be available for $149 with a two-year contract until stock of that device runs out, Siegel said.

Siegel couldn't say whether MMS and data tethering will be available on older versions of the iPhone. But if Apple is offering the features as part of the software upgrade, and AT&T offers the service for the iPhone 3G S phones, it would make sense for the company to offer the features on all iPhones supporting the upgraded software. But Siegel couldn't say for sure if this was the case.

While a delay of a few weeks or even a month or two might not seem like a big deal to some people, it seems strange given that AT&T already offers MMS and smartphone data tethering on several other devices. MMS is practically a standard feature on many new phones sold today. MMS messages cost 30 cents to send and receive. And MMS is included in the carrier's messaging plans, which iPhone users already subscribing to those plans are actually paying for a service they can't yet use. Those plans start at $5 a month for 200 messages, and an unlimited plan costs $20 a month.

AT&T also already offers data tethering on several devices. In fact, AT&T's Web site lists no fewer than 11 smartphones that can be used to provide wireless Internet service to laptops. Phones that offer this functionality, include the recently launched Nokia E71m, the Samsung Propel, and the Palm Centro. AT&T also supports data tethering for BlackBerry devices, including the Curve, Bold and Pearl.

According to AT&T's Web site, smartphone tethering plans, which offers Web connectivity for a laptop plus personal data usage for a smartphone, cost an additional $65 a month. The BlackBerry tethering plan costs $60 a month. Both services include 5GB of usage per month. Customers who exceed the allotted bucket of data usage are charged for overages on a per kilobyte basis.

It's difficult to understand why AT&T would need additional time to offer these new features on the iPhone, since it's clear that the company already offers the services and has established rate plans for them. Siegel wasn't able to elaborate or offer any explanation as to why AT&T would need more time to activate these services.

But I wonder if AT&T is worried about overloading its network. iPhone users download games, video and other Web data at two to four times the rate of other smatphone users, according to comScore. So if they also send mobile messages and use tethered data connections at much higher rates too, AT&T might feel some pain on its network.

Even though AT&T has made a lot of noise lately about upgrades to its 3G network, poor network performance is one of the biggest complaints from iPhone users (myself included.) At this year's South by Southwest conference in Austin, iPhone users complained of delayed text messages, poor Web access and dropped calls.

I'm not really sure how a few weeks or even a couple of months would help AT&T overcome this problem, but perhaps the company needs a little bit more time to prepare its network for what could be an onslaught of activity.

The Web site Boy Genius Report referenced an anonymous source who said that AT&T must manually remove all the "Opt Out MMS codes" on each iPhone account to activate MMS. I'm not sure how true this is, since 29 other operators around the world are planning to have the MMS capability ready when the software launches.

Regardless of the reason behind the delay, one thing is certain. AT&T isn't winning any fans among iPhone users for not making these features available when the software is released.

Boaters on Lake Powell must now have federal inspectors check their craft for zebra or quagga mussels before entering the water.

The new rules announced on Wednesday by the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area go into effect at the end of the month. A boater "self-certification" program in place since 2007 will be discontinued at all but remote launch sites.

The inspection rules apply to all of Lake Powell's major launch ramps. Hours of operation will vary but generally cover daylight hours. Ramps will be closed when inspectors aren't present.

Under the self-certification program, boaters were asked a number of questions that included whether their boat had been in the water during the past 30 days. Depending on the answer, boats would have to be screened.

Leah McGinnis, a spokeswoman for the recreation area, said a number of people had disregarded the process and just launched their boats. "It's a real concern to us," she said.

The thumb-sized mussels can clog pipes and gum up waterworks and pose a threat to water systems across the West. They were accidentally introduced to the Great Lakes in the ballast of ships from eastern Europe and the Ukraine and were first discovered west of the Rockies in January 2007 in Lake Mead.

Glen Canyon has set aside $1.5 million for three years to implement the mandatory rules. The money comes from entrance fees, McGinnis said.

Fourteen staff members have been assigned to do the screening that takes less than a minute. Boats identified to pose a risk will be decontaminated at one of four marinas.

"We want to make it as easy as possible for visitors to enjoy Lake Powell without compromising the effort to keep the lake mussel free," said Glen Canyon Superintendent Stan Austin.

Maybe there's something to that cliche about clowns crying inside.

For his directing debut, funnyman Michael Keaton has chosen a dour existential thriller about a contract killer and a clumsy cop who adore the same sweet, sad young woman.

Set in a frigid Chicago over the Christmas holidays,"The Merry Gentleman" is well-acted despite some narrative difficulties. And Keaton has delivered oodles of richly textured atmosphere.

Ron Lazzeretti's screenplay begins with the shy Kate Frazier (Kelly Macdonald) fleeing her abusive husband. She ends up in Chicago, taking a receptionist job to begin life anew.

Meanwhile assassin-for-hire Frank Logan (Keaton) goes about his bloody business. He may be working too hard; he collapses in sobs after each hit.

One snowy night after a kill, a depressed Frank prepares to leap from the roof of a building. He's spotted by Kate, who has just emerged from her office. She cries out; he vanishes.

It doesn't take long for Chicago cop Dave Murcheson (Tom Bastounes) to realize that the would-be jumper is most likely the killer.

Both men begin to court Kate. Frank arranges an "accidental" meeting (to make sure she doesn't recognize him), then befriends the woman. His interest isn't sexual ... he seems simply to need some human contact.

Dave, on the other hand, is a semi-alcoholic chain smoker on the bounce from a bad marriage. He offers to buy Kate dinner, ostensibly to pick her memory for clues but mostly because he thinks she's cute. When she finds out his interest is romantic she freaks.

Curiously, the cop is creepier than the killer, who becomes the woman's guardian angel.

"The Merry Gentleman" (the Christmas-y title is way ironic) almost goes off the rails with the arrival of Kate's hubby (Bobby Cannavale), who in recent weeks has gotten religion and can't say "Hello" without adding, "Praise Jesus!" Happily, this character isn't around long.

The film is never as good as its parts - some of which are very good indeed. But Keaton knows how to control the medium and establishes a palpable mood without getting all artsy. It's a good start.

The first round of Major League Baseball's 2009 first-Year draft is held between June 9 to June 11 at the MLB Network in New York. The first 2009 MLB pick was completed last evening at Studio 42 at MLB Network in Secaucus, New Jersey. The result is that 16 pitchers are selected on the first pick of the Draft, including 12 right handers and four left handers.

The MLB Draft results are momorable because of the coming of new players. With the Draft in prime time for the first time, Stephen Strasburg was the star of the show. Back in The Show, Boston moved to 6-0 vs. the Yanks, and the Mets outslugged Philly.

MLB reports on the 2009 draft results

"On one June evening, the newest players in the Major League universe - so new they haven't even signed contracts yet - shared the stage with the oldest and most storied rivalry in the game. Stephen Strasburg and the rest of the First-Year Player Draft newbies, meet Yankees-Red Sox, now deadlocked atop the AL East despite a lopsided head-to-head. On the same night, one of the game's best starters gave up four homers and still managed to win thanks to one of the game's best closers, as another Northeast rivalry was renewed."

Here is the list of MLB Draft 2009 Results. This is the first pick, according to Wikipedia.

Stratford -- This is not a softball team. This is an episode of “This Is Your Life.” Here is the unofficial scorecard:

Bob Peruzzotti, Fitch softball assistant coach: Fitch High graduate, Board of Education member.

Bob's daughter, Kate: the Fitch coach. Also a Fitch grad and Fitch softball alum, a player for former coach Glen Graham, who played for original varsity coach Bernie Nasser.

Sophomore Brianna Turgeon: Niece of Cheryl Turgeon, Fitch softball alum.

Senior shortstop Brittany Duclos: Niece of Michelle Leger, former Fitch softball captain.

Arielle Cooper: daughter of Renee Khoury Cooper, Fitch grad, Fitch softball alum.

”I remember the days,” Khoury Cooper was saying Monday, after watching Fitch advance to the Class LL state championship game over Mercy of Middletown. “The good ol' days. Bernie Nasser. If we stepped out of line … he used to make us crawl to left field. He made us want to win.”

Officially, Nasser said, it was not a crawl.

”Duckwalk,” he said. “From home plate to the left-field foul pole, back to home, then to the right-field foul pole. I learned that in wrestling.”

And to think all this happened 25 years ago. Twenty-five years. Twenty-five years that felt like 25 seconds.

Memo to all the Fitch seniors of 2009: You'll remember the shapes and forms of this week - of your whole careers - all your life. That's the power of sports. Even better, that's what happens in this program. You can't help it. When you're in, you're in forever. Just like your moms and aunts.

”I didn't think we'd get along,” Bob Peruzzotti was saying about the prospect of coaching with Kate. “I figured she wouldn't listen to me. But this has been one of the best times of my life.”

It only fits perfectly that such a familial program has one of its own coaching the biggest game in its history Friday or Saturday. Fitch plays Masuk of Monroe, whose resume consists of a pitcher going to LSU and 77 straight wins.

Kate Peruzzotti, who coached at Waterford for a year while Liz Sutman was on maternity leave, is back home.

”We talk about it every night,” her dad said. “Kate loves Liz. She's a friend and a mentor. But it's different for Kate at Fitch. There's nothing better than coaching at your alma mater.”

Unless it's watching your kid play for it.

”I think it means more to me now than it did then,” Khoury Cooper said. “Not too many people's kids even go to the same high school as they did. (Arielle) is a good girl.”

And a good player. She has no choice. In addition to her mom's resume with softball and as an all-state soccer player, Uncle Scott was an all-state baseball player at Fitch and made it to Class AA with the Orioles and Indians.

”My mom's always telling me what I need to work on,” Cooper said. “She doesn't think I listen. But I always do.”

Nasser, who recently retired as a teacher at Fitch, sounds like the proud father. The Fitch softball program started as a club team in the early '70s coached by Tom Doyle, who would go on to win basketball championships at Fitch with his own kids.

”Tommy didn't want to coach varsity and I admit, I wanted to coach baseball, but some guy named Eddie Harvey came along,” Nasser said, referring to the future Fitch coach who won three state titles. “Now softball is like my baby. This makes me feel good to see all the kids playing after all their relatives did.”

Nasser was still rattling off names long into the conversation. Pitcher Aubrey Latham's dad, Mark, wrestled for Nasser. On and on it goes.

Fitch has a number of college players-in-waiting, including Cooper, who has never been the best player on any of her teams, but has done the family proud. She's playing at Eastern Connecticut next year.

Now she's left searching for two things: a state championship and her aunt's recipe for mussels.

Aunt Marieke, Scott's wife, runs South Side Bistro in New London. If it's not the best food in town, it's in the championship round.

”Those things are sooooo good,” Cooper said of her aunt's mussels. “But she won't tell me how to cook them.”

And with that, Arielle Cooper laughed and was off to find her mom after the game. One generation to the next. This is Fitch softball.

DALLAS (AP) — Norman Brinker, the restaurant mogul who developed the salad bar and built a worldwide casual dining empire that includes Chili's Grill & Bar, has died at age 78.

Brinker died Tuesday at a hospital in Colorado, said Robin Rymer at Swan-Law Funeral Home in Colorado Springs. She did not know the cause of death.

Brinker retired as chairman of Dallas-based Brinker International in 2000. The company now has 1,700 restaurants in 27 countries, including the On the Border and Maggiano's chains, according to its Web site.

Brinker started with a coffee shop in Dallas in the 1960s. He developed the concept for Steak & Ale casual restaurants, with its popular salad bars. He also developed the Bennigan's chain.

He bought Chili's and expanded it, taking his company public in 1983.

David Carradine had reportedly hinted at a secret fascination with sex and its connection with death. The Kill Bill star, who was found hanging in his Bangkok hotel room last week, had opened up to Ulli Lommel, the director of Absolute Evil, in which Carradine played a gang leader - one of the veteran star's final roles. Lommel has now blogged about their personal conversations on his website.
"Before we started shooting Absolute Evil - Final Exit, David and I spent several hours in his trailer to not only discuss the film and his role, but also issues concerning death, suicide, torture, sex and God," he wrote.

***

"And he repeatedly mentioned the fact that he was searching for the meaning of life and his desire to know more about the mystery of death. "He also stated that in moments of intense sexual activities one could get a glimpse of God and the aftermath. "We decided to make that the main focus of the Absolute Evil trilogy."

Carradine, who was working on a film in Thailand at the time of his death, was found hanged in what many suggest was an act of auto-erotic asphyxiation. The actor’s family is arranging a second autopsy in the US.

Newt Gingrich might not be “a citizen of the world,” as he proudly proclaimed at the G.O.P.’s annual fundraising dinner, going so far as to offer a reverse shout-out to all of the countries he distinctly wouldn’t want to be a citizen of —“North Korea, Zimbabwe, Venezuela, Cuba or Russia.” But he did use his keynote address tonight to touch on questions facing the citizens of his Republican world.

Mr. Gingrich, the former speaker of the House, acknowledged Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin in the audience and called for an “inclusive, not exclusive” approach to the Republican Party’s future. He also addressed the recent controversy about who best represents the party “(I am happy that Dick Cheney is a Republican. I am also happy that Colin Powell is a Republican.”). And that was just the beginning.

“I think our goal should be to reach out to the American people in every possible way, to make sure that John Boehner becomes the Speaker of the House January of 2011 and Mitch McConnell becomes the Senate majority leader and that this is a one-term presidency, in the Jimmy Carter tradition,” Mr Gingrich said. His comments echoed a sentiment Mr. Boehner had mentioned earlier, when he called on the audience to help him “make sure Nancy Pelosi doesn’t spend one more day in the Speaker’s chair.”

The event — jointly sponsored by the National Republican Senatorial Committee and the National Republican Congressional Committee — raised $14.45 million. And with its exposed ceiling beams (courtesy of the Washington Convention Center’s Hall D) and rouge-hued reception rooms, the event almost felt more like an oversized nightclub than the steak-and-vegetable-medley affair for super-donors that it actually was.

Although Governor Palin did not speak, her brief walk-and-wave to her seat with her husband, Todd, before the event began generated a smattering of applause and put an end to the nagging question of the day: Just what was the deal with Ms. Palin and the dinner, and would she be making an appearance?

She did, and when the crowd sat down to dinner after brief remarks by Congressman Paul Ryan, Senator Orrin Hatch, Senator Mitch McConnell and the House minority leader, John Boehner,

north korea labor camps

north korea labor camps

Reporting from Seoul -- If North Korea carries out its controversial court verdict, two American TV journalists sentenced to 12 years of hard labor Monday face a grim future in a notorious gulag system, said the author of a study on the regime's prisons.

Laura Ling and Euna Lee, reporters for San Francisco-based Current TV, were convicted by the nation's top Central Court of an undefined "grave crime" against the hard-line regime after they were reportedly arrested in North Korean territory in March.

In a typically terse statement issued Monday, the state-run Korean Central News Agency reported that the women were sentenced to 12 years of "reform through labor."

While Pyongyang has not said where the women will serve their time, their future likely includes the possibility of hard labor, starvation and torture in a penal system many consider among the world's most repressive, said David Hawk, author of the 2004 study "The Hidden Gulag: Exposing North Korea's Prison Camps."

Ling and Lee may be sent to a "kyo-hwa-so" or re-education reformatory "that is the equivalent of a felony penitentiary in the U.S., as opposed to a county jail or misdemeanor facility," he said.

"It's extremely hard labor under extremely brutal conditions," said Hawk. "These places have very high rates of deaths in detention. The casualties from forced labor and inadequate food supplies are very high."

Because the pair was tried by the nation's highest court, there can be no appeal, analysts say.

Obama administration officials said Monday that the White House is working "through all possible channels" to secure the release of the women.

david carradine death photo thai

David Carradine's distraught family is outraged over a Thai newspaper's publication of explicit photos taken of the actor's body hanging naked in a hotel closet.

The grisly image of the "Kill Bill" star ran on the front page of the paper, and another outlet published an autopsy shot of his body at a morgue.

"The family is outraged about the release of these photos," said Mark Geragos, an attorney who represents Keith Carradine, the actor's brother.

In an interview with RadarOnline.com, Geragos also threatened to sue if the photos are published in the United States.

The shocking front-page picture shows Carradine with his hands tied in front of him, hanging from the support bar in a closet. Tattoos on the lower half of his nude body also are visible.

Carradine, 72, who also starred in the 1970s television series "Kung Fu," was found dead on Thursday.

Carradine had a history of engaging in autoerotic asphyxiation, a sexual practice that often involves tying a rope around the neck, friends said.

He was in Bangkok filming his latest movie, "Stretch."

norman lear

norman lear

(CBS) "All In The Family" was a huge hit for Norman Lear - KING LEAR, you could call him, considering the respect that he enjoys in the world of entertainment. Bill Whitaker has a Sunday Profile:

There's gotta be story behind the hat … and there is.

Norman Lear's wife bought him his signature hat to keep him from scratching his head while he writes.

But he's a man who has worn many hats over the years: TV, movie & music producer, political activist, family man. At 86, you'd assume he'd done it all. But ask Norman Lear and he'll tell you he's only just begun.

"No, there's no slowing down," Lear told Bill Whitaker.

"Why not? You've earned the right to say, 'You know, I want to sit back and watch all these things come to fruition.'"

"I've earned the right to do what I want to do,' is another way of saying what you just said," Lear responded. "And what I want to do is wake up every morning of my life to do something that I think matters."

The man best known for creating hit after TV hit in the 1970s is occupied these days with music. He bought into a record company 10 years ago, and today his greatest passion is Concord Record group's latest project: Playing for Change, little-known street musicians recorded separately around the world, brought together in song.

It's had 12 million hits on the Internet, a tour is planned … a CD. Profits help build schools for music in the third world.

Lear wants nothing less than to inspire - no, change the world through music.

"I've never shown that - [and] I've shown it to a lot of people - where they haven't been emotionally connected when it was over," he said.

The family of the late David Carradine seem to be outraged over the pictures of David’s dead body that were published by the Thai newspaper Thai Rath.

The Thai Rath newspaper, which is a regional newspaper published in Bangkok in Thai language, ran disturbing pictures of Carradine’s corpse in the front and as well as in its inside pages. The pictures published on the Saturday cover of the newspaper Thai Rath shows a naked body of Carradine suspended from a clothes bar in a suite closet. The hands apparently bound together above the head and feet on the floor. While the face is blacked out, other more explicit parts of the picture are censored. And, the relatives of late Carradine do like any part of it.

“The family is outraged about the release of these photos,” said the lawyer for the Carradine family. The lawyer further added that the “family will be filing a suit for invasion of privacy and emotional distress if the David Carradine death photo is run in a United States publication.”

Carradine’s dead body discovered on Thursday, 4th June inside the closet of his suite by a chambermaid at the Bangkok’s Swissotel Nai Lert Park Hotel. The authorities were immediately alerted, who after some investigations, ruled out foul play saying that the cause of death could be suicide.

However, the family is not satisfied with the investigations done by the Thai police. According to Mark Geragos, an attorney to Carradine’s half brother Keith Carradine, “The family will seek an independent autopsy by famed forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Baden to determine whether another person could have been involved.”

french open mens final 2009

french open mens final 2009

The French Open men's final 2009 match between #2 Roger Federer and #23 Robin Soderling is set to start in about a half an hour. Coverage starts at 9:00 a.m. EST on NBC.

It's been a great tournament so far with some amazing upsets and big comebacks. Especially for Soderling who knocked off #1 Rafael Nadal in the fourth round. Nadal was considered an automatic for the finals since he had won the last four French Open tournaments but Soderling was able to eliminate him in four sets. Ranked 23rd, Soderling was also able to beat #10 Nikolav Davydenko and #12 Fernando Gonzalez to reach the finals. He had to comeback from down 4 - 1 in the fifth set against Gonzalez in order to advance.

Federer on the other hand is no surprise. He was expected to make it far into the tourney and challenge for the title. However in order to get to the finals he had to make a couple incredible comebacks. In the fourth round he was down two sets to none before he clawed his way back to win three straight sets and advance to the quarterfinals. In the semifinals he got in a hole again, digging himself a deficit of two sets to one against #5 Juan Martin Del Potro. Again he was able to show some resolve and win two straight sets to advance to the finals.

It sets up to be a great match-up for the championship. I am flipping back and forth on who I want to see win. Federer on one hand has never won the French Open and this would complete his career Grand Slam. But I always like to see the underdog win, and it would be great to see Soderling win over the #2 ranked player after already beating the #1 ranked player. I think I'll be rooting for Soderling.

french open 2009 tv schedule

french open 2009 tv schedule

Ah, the traditions of tennis. Unfortunately, one the traditions of the sport we love is it’s absolute ludicrous TV programming. If you awoke early like me hoping to catch live semifinal action today from Paris on your TV here in the U.S., forget it, because it’s not on.

After watching countless hours of live coverage on ESPN2 and the Tennis Channel how could I forget that thanks to NBC and the geniuses who run and market top tier tennis, the semifinals from Paris are again on tape delay which means if you want to watch either or both Fernando Gonzalez v. Robin Soderling and Roger Federer v. Juan Martin Del Potro live as it happens, don’t bother switching on your televisions today, it won’t be on.

The tradition continues…Online streaming here I come.

As for the matches, I love both Gonzales and Federer today and both pretty easily. Gonzalez is a true claycourter, Soderling is not. Gonzo’s also won the last four meetings against the Swede and I know Robin’s been red-hot but I just think the Chilean has the experience of having been to this stage before.

In the second semifinal I think DelPo will keep things close against Federer who will be feeling the nerves. But Roger is just too darn close to let it slip away now. The nerves, the pressure and the expectations are there and I expect Roger will handle what’s to come.

nevaeh buchanan body found

The body of a 5-year-old girl named Neveah Buchanan, who has been missing for nearly two weeks, has likely been found, according to authorities, leaving the family completely devastated.

The body of a young child has been found in River Raisin in southeast Michigan and police say it is likely that of Neveah Buchanan, who went missing almost two weeks ago.

Reports claim a fisherman happened upon the body and called police immediately. The body was dressed in the same clothing that Neveah Buchanan disappeared in.

Authorities say the cause of death appears to be murder, but testing needs to be done to determine how she was murdered and to confirm the DNA.

Suspects George Kennedy, a convicted sex offender, and Roy Smith are both in police custody.

national donut day

national donut day

What's the one holiday that can bridge all divides, bring together all Americans regardless of race, color, gender, age or favorite college football team? National Doughnut Day. Celebrated the first Friday of June -- that's TOMORROW -- it's a great excuse to treat friends, co-workers and most importantly yourself to a few dozen doughnuts. (Heck, who's counting?)

The perfect marriage of starch, sugar and fat, the doughnut is the quintessential working man's snack. Perhaps that's why nearly every doughnut shop in the city -- Magee's, Spudnuts, Winchell's, Krispy Kreme, Yum Yum or any of the thousands of strip mall vendors -- offers a passable version. As long as they're not horribly stale, I'm happy to eat these miraculous deep-fried concoctions anytime, anywhere. But as a self-proclaimed doughnut aficionado I do have a few favorites. While I still weep for the demise of Frittelli's, here are 9 Los Angeles doughnut shops worth the drive. (And if you buy from Randy's Donuts, you'll be helping the Salvation Army. BakeMark will make a donation to the Salvation Army for each doughnut sold on June 5, 2009 at participating shops.)

david carradine murdered

david carradine murdered

Questions about David Carradine's death have led many to assume that he was murdered.

What initally looked like a suicide, the death of David Carradine is now believed to have been accidental. When asked, a representative told the media that David Carradine was hung accidentally by his neck and other body parts- the natural assumption from this statement is that he was engaged in some sort of auto-erotic asphyxiation.

There is evidence that David was not alone in the hotel room at the time of his death, but the other party has either not come forward or has not been named. Speculation that David Carradine was murdered is just that - speculation.

Auto-erotic asphyxiation is a sexual act that involves choking or otherwise cutting off the blood flow to one's head during sexual contact; it is considered very dangerous as these kinds of accidents are all too common.

In any case, I think we should be celebrating this man's life, not making light of his death; it has to be very embarassing for his family.

obama cairo speech

obama cairo speech

A group of Pakistanis who watched President Barack Obama's Cairo speech to Muslims are praising the American leader for his skill as a public speaker. But after seeing the speech on television at VOA's Islamabad bureau, they say it lacked specific policy details that they consider crucial to improving U.S. relations with Pakistan.

For Sajid Mahmoood Qazi, a student of law and international relations who works for the Pakistani government, there is no doubt that Obama's speech in Cairo was impressive.

"It was a beautiful discourse on the evolution of American society and the role Islam played, and the role of Muslims, whether they are cabbies in New York or have made fabulous riches," he said. "It is wonderful to listen [to] from the highest level of American leadership."

But he says, as a student of law, President Obama's description of the Iraq war as a "war of choice" struck him as hypocritical.

"Well, I'm sorry Mr. President. It was much more beyond that. As a start, he [Obama] should have expressed the regrets, if not the apologies, for the invasion of Iraq," he added.

Muhammad Arif Muqueem, a university student in Islamabad, also praised Mr. Obama's speech. But Muqueem said it did not propose solutions to specific policy issues that he believes must be addressed.

"His speech was good but just for listening. Not for understanding," Muqueen said. "I think this is impossible until you solve the Israel and Palestinian dispute, Pakistan and Afghanistan dispute and the Iraq dispute."

Asad Farooq, is a student at Bahria University in Islamabad. He also says the speech was a brilliant effort. However, Farooq wonders whether Mr. Obama would acknowledge that U.S. missile attacks - commonly referred to as drone attacks - on suspected terrorist bases in Pakistan make it difficult to trust his intentions.

"What is extremism? Now come the drone attacks which happen in Pakistan. Now there's a reason for extremism. They usually kill children and women in tribal areas. They don't kill the terrorists," Farooq said. "Drone attacks are not going to help; use of force is not going to help. I often say a statement that 'terror is an idea and you don't fight ideas with conventional armies'."

Overall, these Pakistanis say it will take much more than just a very well-delivered speech to alter Pakistani Muslims' attitudes about the United States. They say it will take concrete change to decades of American policy in Pakistan.

If your business is still uncertain on how to adopt and/or capitalize on the success of Twitter, consider yourself in good company.

A gathering on Sunday of enterprises, nonprofits, entertainers, and just plain old attention seekers could not agree to agree on a single best use or practice of Twitter. The 140-character microblog entered into mainstream this year thanks to celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, Ashton Kutcher, and Shaquille O'Neill.

But the future of Twitter may be a flash in the pan, according to researchers at analyst group ThinkTank. Some 44% of people surveyed by ThinkTank believe Twitter has long-term value, while 52% believe it to be just a trend.

At an event in San Francisco known as TwitterCon (hash-tagged as #twtrcon), speakers tried to quell fears of a total Fail Whale. The panels featured insights from well-established corporations such as Virgin America, Comcast, Dell, Carl's Jr., and Cisco, as well as novelty appearances from the rapper M.C. Hammer and the author of Twitterville, Shel Israel. Each speaker tried to define what it means to contribute to Twitter, use Twitter in marketing a brand or idea, or relate successes on Twitter.

"We had a passenger on one of our planes who had not yet gotten his in-flight meal and started to Twitter about it from his seat. Our marketing team saw the post and radioed the plane to help him," related Porter Gale, VP of marketing for Virgin America. "Guest service expectations are becoming a real-time issue and keeping that level of service is, too."

Likewise, Frank Eliason, Comcast's director of digital care, got a vote of confidence from the audience for using Twitter to erase the cable provider's historical reputation for less-than-stellar customer service.

"I have worked with people on Sundays through Twitter and even given out my phone number to customers in the name of better service," Eliason said.

In fact, using Twitter to improve service has been shown to improve not only reputation but sales. According to ThinkTank research, 40% of Twitter users surveyed regularly search for products or services online using Twitter. About 20% of those queried follow at least one product or service. And because of the information gleaned from following a particular brand, 12% in the survey said they're inclined to choose a service or buy a product because of Twitter.

david carradine

david carradine

David Carradine appeared in over one hundred films

Carradine was born Dec. 8, 1936 in Hollywood

Carradine was the eldest son of actor John Carradine

1972 to 1975: Carradine played Kwai Chang Caine on tv series Kung Fu

2005: Carradine won Saturn Award for best supporting actor for Kill Bill: Vol. 2

A leading and supporting player of TV and movies, David Carradine rose to fame with his iconic role, Kwai Chang Caine, the half-Asian student of life on the popular TV series, "Kung Fu" (ABC, 1972-75) - a role he would go on to reprise for a syndicated series in the late 1990s. The son of legendary actor John Carradine, he excelled at playing villains in action and terror films which, unfortunately, often carried a "soon to be on a video shelf near you" proviso. Almost as famous as his Kung Fu persona, was his psychedelic lifestyle and devotion to Eastern philosophy, particularly in the 1960s and '70s when Carradine seemed more engaged in his alternative lifestyle than in furthering his career - with the possible exceptions of his starring role as folk singer Woody Guthrie in the Oscar-nominated "Bound for Glory" (1976) and a turn in Ingmar Bergman's confusing "The Serpent's Egg" (1977).

Carradine had a restless youth, born Dec. 8, 1936 in Hollywood but raised in Manhattan, NY, the eldest son in an acting brood that included famous half-siblings, Keith and Robert. Educated at San Francisco State University, he studied music theory and composition. It was while writing music for the drama department's annual revues, that he discovered his own passion for the stage, joining a Shakespearean repertory company and learning his craft on his feet. It was while sporadically attending college, during which he worked as a manual laborer, that he began openly experimenting with drugs. After a two-year stint in the U.S. Army, he found work in New York as a commercial artist and got his first taste of fame on Broadway in "The Deputy" and "The Royal Hunt of the Sun" opposite Christopher Plummer. In 1964, he also made his feature film debut with a bit part in "Taggart," a western based on a novel by Louis L'Amour. Carradine next inherited Alan Ladd's role of a fading gunslinger for the small screen version of "Shane" (ABC, 1966) - a production that failed in the ratings, despite predictions to the contrary.

Nevertheless, the actor found constant employment in a string of forgettable films, with the occasional masterpiece. Martin Scorsese tapped the actor to play a railroad union organizer in "Boxcar Bertha" (1972) and then cast him in a small but memorable role as a drunk who is shot while urinating in one of Scorsese's first classics, "Mean Streets" (1973). By the time the latter was released, Carradine was starring as the Martial artist on the popular TV series, "Kung Fu." The part catapulted Carradine to a whole new level, and so began the actor's life-long obsession with the Martial arts - an interest which would years later, result in the release of several exercise videos teaching the martial arts of Tai chi and Qi Gong exercises, which the actor would produce and star in. After only three seasons on his star-making show, he left to pursue a film career.

Moving behind the camera, Carradine directed and starred in the little seen "You and Me" (1975). After his success with "Bound for Glory", it appeared as if Carradine was headed for more mainstream movie stardom, but his subsequent vehicles were lacking. Only Walter Hill's 1980 western, "The Long Riders" - which used the gimmick of teaming filmdom's real-life brother acts - the Carradines, the Quaids and the Keachs) - onscreen as brothers, was above-average. His second attempt in the director's chair, "Americana" (1983) also met with a less than stellar reception.

As an actor, however, Carradine continued to churn out genre fare to varying degrees of success. On the big screen, he was the villain tracked by Chuck Norris in "Lone Wolf McQuade" (1982) and an evil German soldier in "The Misfit Brigade/Wheels of Terror" (1987). Carradine continued his low-grade film streak with such efforts as "Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat" (1990), "Dune Warriors" (1991) and "Waxwork II" (1992). In 1997, he filmed roles in "Macon County Jail," opposite Ally Sheedy and "The New Swiss Family Robinson" with Jane Seymour. From there, Carradine's career continued seemingly on autopilot through a variety of forgettable, direct-to-video thrillers, low-grade foreign films and TV guest spots which almost always played on his familiar "Kung Fu" past. Occasionally those guest spots would showcase Carradine's largely untapped dramatic abilities and charisma, such as his recurring guest spots as Andrew Weller on the second season of the legal drama "Family Law" (CBS, 1999-2002). Surprisingly, he also ran against type by guesting as an old friend of Hilary Duff's father, Sam McGuire - in fact, Carradine's real-life half-brother Robert - on an episode of the Disney Channel's frothy tween sit-com "Lizzie McGuire" (2001-04).

Back to his bad-ass Martial arts roots, thanks to director and fan Quentin Tarantino, Carradine finally got a chance to both revisit past glories and reinvent himself - much like Tarantino's other hand-picked then past-their-prime-stars, John Travolta and Robert Forster before him - when he was cast as the enigmatic assassin leader Bill in the director's violent exploitation homage, "Kill Bill, Vol. 1" (2003) and its sequel, "Kill Bill, Vol. 2" (2004). The movies were a dual sensation, bringing to the actor a new legion of younger fans who were not even alive during Carradine's "Kung Fu" run. Suddenly cool again, Carradine began landing commercial spots and high profile guest appearances on such hip TV shows as the Jennifer Garner spy series "Alias" (ABC, 2001- ) and the Patricia Arquette thriller, "Medium" (NBC, 2005- ).

national running day

national running day

Gourmets may be guilty of looking ahead to Friday, which according to Dunkin' Donuts, is National Doughnut Day, but for fitness buffs, June 3 is a red letter day that will henceforth be venerated as National Running Day.

In lieu of parades, 5K fun runs are expected to proliferate.

So notes New Balance Athletic Shoe Inc. The Boston-based maker of athletic footwear said it will join today with "thousands of runners across the nation to commemorate the inaugural National Running Day."

In a press release, New Balance said it will highlight National Running Day through content on its website www.newbalance.com and on a Facebook fan page.

"We are proud to celebrate National Running Day to showcase our brand’s long-time love of running,” Dan Green, New Balance's integrated marketing associate of running, said in a statement. “Through our interactive program and associate activities, we are excited to join thousands of runners across America in highlighting the healthy, positive benefits of running.”

The New Balance press release said the company will commemorate National Running Day internally with a 5K fun run along the Charles River for company associates.

According to the release, the idea for a special day was created by the athletic footwear industry to promote running as a healthy, easy, and accessible form of exercise.

Thirty of these children, between the ages of 12 to 16, have been paired up with college-aged mentors and brought to South Africa by Malaak Compton-Rock, the wife of comedian Chris Rock. She brought them to volunteer -- to serve the impoverished and the AIDS orphans in this country with the highest HIV-infected population in the world.

Compton-Rock has carved her own niche in espousing service -- giving back. She often quotes her mentor Marian Wright Edelman, founder of the Children's Defense Fund: "Service is the rent we pay for living."

The South Africa trip is Compton-Rock's brainchild -- to broaden the horizons of young teens and give them perspective on their own lives.

"I believe by traveling you open up your life," Compton-Rock tells a crowd gathered for a press conference the morning after the group has arrived. "You don't think locally, you start to think globally and internationally and I think it gives you a sense of confidence."

She also wants the children to know, "that in the United States of America, even in Bushwick, we have certain services that I want the children to understand that they need to take advantage of."

air france crash update

air france crash update

According to authorities a crucial Air France crash data may be be lost at sea, but Brazil hopes to find the jet under the ocean sea.

Brazil's president believes it will be technically possible to find the wreckage of the Air France jet that crashed in the Atlantic earlier this week, and salvage the black box.

France has said the flight recorders from the plane, which went missing en route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris with 228 passengers and crew on board early on Monday, are unlikely to be found due to the extreme depth.

However, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was quoted by the Globo daily as saying: "I think that a country that can produce oil at a depth of 6,000 meters will be able to find an airplane at a depth of 2,000 meters."

He said Brazil would continue "doing everything possible and impossible" to find the black box and the passengers' bodies.

Brazil's Air Force said on Tuesday it had found fragments of the wreckage floating in the area where that the plane last made contact.

The French Bureau for the Investigation of Air Accidents said the black boxes would probably not be found due to insufficient information the mountainous terrain of the ocean floor, and that the wreckage could have sunk to a depth of 3,000 meters.

"I am not very optimistic that we will be able to find the flight recorders," Paul Louis Arslanian told reporters.

France has sent a research ship with two mini-submarines to the area.

The debris was discovered around 650 kilometers (390 miles) north of Brazil's Fernando de Noronha archipelago. Before losing contact, Air France Flight 447 had sent an automatic signal to airline maintenance computers from the area, indicating several technical failures.

Lightning has been suggested as a possible cause of what, if confirmed, would be the worst civilian plane crash since 2001. However, French authorities are not ruling out terrorism.

The Brazilian Navy has dispatched five vessels to assist in the search effort. The operation also involves five planes, two Air Force helicopters and four commercial vessels.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Stocks resumed the advance Tuesday morning after a positive report from the housing industry fueled bets that the economy is closer to stabilizing.

The Dow Jones industrial average (INDU) added 16 points, or 0.2%, around 90 minutes into the session. The index briefly turned positive for the year for the first time since Jan. 7.

The S&P 500 (SPX) index gained 1 point or 0.1%. The Nasdaq composite (COMP) gained 5 points or 0.3%.

On Tuesday, the National Association of Realtors reported that pending home sales jumped 6.7% in April, and posted year-over-year increases in ever region but the West.

Stocks in the U.S. and abroad jumped Monday after upbeat reports on manufacturing, and construction and consumer spending added to hopes that the pace of the recession is slowing.

Such bets have helped lift the stock market over the past three months, after the Dow and S&P 500 slumped to more than 12-year lows.

After a sluggish start Tuesday morning, stocks resumed the advance.

Financials: Three more banks announced plans to repay the government bailout money.

JPMorgan Chase (JPM, Fortune 500) said late Monday it plans to raise $5 billion towards the $25 billion in owes the government. American Express (AXP, Fortune 500) also said late Monday that it will raise $500 million toward the $3.4 billion it owes.

Morgan Stanley (MS, Fortune 500) said Tuesday that it plans to raise $2.2 billion.

The Federal Reserve is expected to announce next week which of the 19 banks that it stress tested are in good enough shape to pay back bailout funds. In order for banks to pay back the government, they must prove that they can raise money without depending on guarantees against losses provided by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC).

In other financial news, Citigroup (C, Fortune 500) will withhold severance payments worth tens of millions of dollars to five former executives, according to a published report.

Citigroup will be kicked out of the Dow, with home, auto and commercial insurer Travelers (TRV, Fortune 500) to take its place starting Monday June 8. The government now owns a large stake in Citi and the company is undergoing a restructuring.

GM: General Motors announced the sale of its Hummer truck brand one day after it filed for bankruptcy protection, bringing an end to an era for the automaker.

The bankruptcy is seen as necessary by lawmakers who say the industry requires a broad overhaul. GM's bankruptcy will result in 20,000 job losses and the closure of 12 plants.

GM is now trading under the symbol GMGMQ, as of Tuesday. It will be removed from the S&P 500 at the close of trading Tuesday and is also being kicked out of the Dow. Cisco Systems (CSCO, Fortune 500) takes its place starting Monday.

President Obama will be hosting a summit on “fiscal responsibility” this week. The exact purpose of such a summit at a time when the world economy is collapsing from a decade of financial irresponsibility is not clear. However, one name on the guest list does stand out: Peter G. Peterson. (Full disclosure: I am also on the list).

Those who follow debates on budget issues closely have probably heard of Peter G. Peterson. Mr. Peterson has been a prominent figure weighing in on budget debates for close to two decades.

Mr. Peterson was the Commerce Secretary in the Nixon administration. He then went on to make billions of dollars as one of the top executives at the Blackstone Group, a private equity fund. Mr. Peterson is known as one of the top beneficiaries of the fund managers’ tax break, through which he personally pocketed tens of millions of dollars.

Mr. Peterson has never been shy about using his Wall Street wealth to try to cut Social Security and Medicare, and he recently stepped up his efforts. Last year he spent $1 billion to endow the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, which seems to have destroying these programs at the top of its agenda. (Mr. Peterson also has a think tank named after him, the Peter G. Peterson Institute for International Economics.)

Peterson’s main story is that these programs are bankrupting the government and will impose an unbearable burden on future generations. Of course, the reality is that we have a broken health care system. The projections of scary budget deficits that Peterson’s crew constantly cites is based almost entirely on projections of exploding health care costs. If the United States can get its health care system in order, as every other country has done, then we would be projecting enormous budget surpluses as far as the eye can see.

It is remarkable that the Peterson crew can continue to whine about generation inequality even after we just saw the most enormous redistribution from older generations to younger generations in the history of the world. The $8 trillion in wealth lost in the collapse of the housing bubble was mostly held by older workers and retirees. The $7 trillion lost in the stock market collapse was also primarily held by older workers and retirees.

The beneficiaries of these huge price declines will be younger workers, and those yet to enter the labor force, who will be able to buy homes and stock at prices far lower than they would have paid just two years ago. This huge generational redistribution would cause serious economists to change their view of inter-generational fairness. After all, how much money do they think the baby boom cohort should be forced to surrender?

However, this massive redistribution from older generations to younger ones has just caused the Peterson crew to redouble their efforts. After all, the Peterson crew somehow couldn’t see an $8 trillion housing bubble as it was growing. Why should they pay any attention to it now, just because its collapse has thrown the world economy into the worst downturn since the Great Depression?

Unfortunately, instead of being subject to the ridicule they so richly deserve, the Peterson crew is treated reverentially by the media. Ostensibly serious news outlets suspend normal journalistic practices in discussing the Peterson gang.

This deference is best evidenced by the way the Peterson Foundation is described in news stories. Instead of describing the Peterson Foundation by its political leanings, in a recent article the Washington Post characterized the Foundation as an organization that “advocates for federal fiscal responsibility.” The New York Times described the Foundation as having been “formed to raise awareness about the nation’s economic challenges.”

Every organization has boilerplate wording that describe its mission. (The Center for Economic and Policy Research “was established in 1999 to promote democratic debate on the most important economic and social issues that affect people’s lives.”) News outlets never use these descriptions in their coverage – except in the case of the Peter G. Peterson Foundation.

The public would be right to be outraged that a Wall Street billionaire is trying to take away the core social insurance programs that they will be dependent on in their old age. It was the Wall Street crew that wrecked the economy, costing millions of people their jobs and tens of millions their life savings. Now Peterson wants to use much of his Wall Street winnings to take away the only source of support that tens of millions of retirees have left.

But no one expects ethical behavior from Wall Street tycoons. The public does expect a little more from the media. The people who report on budget issues should be able to step back and assess the issues themselves rather than just parrot the lines that the Peterson Foundation has fed them. And they should be able to sufficiently contain their enthusiasm for Peterson’s quest that they describe his Foundation in the same sort of language they use to describe the other actors involved in this debate.

WESTPORT —
In August or September, when three osprey who call Westport their seasonal home migrate to South America, their paths will be tracked on an hourly basis through small transmitters on their backs. The data will be posted online and be used in Grade 3 classes to teach students about migration and wildlife behavior.

“If we can figure out where these birds are going, maybe it’s a community like ours,” said Becky Cushing, the volunteer coordinator and osprey monitor for Mass Audubon’s Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary.

The Westport River Watershed Alliance and Allens Pond, who maintain about 80 osprey breeding platforms along the lower Westport River and Buzzards Bay shore, have also been tracking where the three osprey — all males, because they catch most of the food — catch their fish locally.

Two of them often find fish at the upper east branch of the river, which Cushing said indicates a high fish population. The other osprey goes to Narragansett Bay, she said.

The ospreys who fly to Westport each March spend their winters in or around Venezuela, said Gay Gillespie, the watershed alliance’s executive director, though one was once found in Paraguay, much further south. Adult ospreys make the trip each year but young ospreys spend their first few years in the warmer climate, Cushing said. The birds can be identified by metal bands tracing them to Westport.

Ospreys are closely studied but are still mysterious, said Gina Purtell, the sanctuary director at Allens Pond. The birds, whose habitat can be identified by the wooden breeding platforms, can act as “ambassadors” for the public to learn more about other birds and how different hemispheres, as well as land and sea, are connected, she said.

About 160 ospreys are believed to spend the summers around the Westport River to breed. Many young ospreys don’t survive their initial migration south, Purtell said.

LONDON — Hours after being beaten into second place on the “Britain’s Got Talent” TV show, Susan Boyle, an instant celebrity who rose from obscurity to global renown and recognition, was taken from a London hotel to a private clinic under police escort Sunday night, the police and her associates said Monday.

Scotland Yard did not explain what she was suffering from, or identify her by name. But, in response to questions about Ms. Boyle, a spokeswoman said: “Police were called to doctors assessing a woman under the Mental Health Act. The woman was taken voluntarily by ambulance to a clinic. At the request of doctors, police accompanied the ambulance.”

British newspapers reported that she had been begun to behave erratically after losing to a dance group called Diversity in the Saturday night finals of the show that had transformed her into a worldwide phenomenon. In public she had seemed gracious in defeat.

But one of the show’s judges, Piers Morgan, said Monday that Ms. Boyle, 47, was emotionally drained and exhausted. “Nobody has had to put up with the kind of attention Susan has had. Nobody could have predicted it,” he told GMTV.

“It has been crazy, she has gone from anonymity to being the most downloaded woman in history,” he said.

“She was very tired and hasn’t been sleeping. She has just gone away to have some time to herself and to sleep and eat, doing all the things she hasn’t been able to do in the last week.”

Today, the Air France flight AF447 left the Rio de Janeiro airport, and it should have landed at the Paris airport at 09:15 GMT, however, the plane is missing. The pilots of the Airbus A330-200 plane reported a technical fault at the electric circuit, and that they are experiencing turbulence. After that, the AF447 flight has gone missing and there are no news yet. Air France officials said that they don’t know where the plane is at the moment, and they are hoping that all people aboard and the crew are OK.

The AF Airbus A330 had 216 passengers and 12 crew, and the Brazilian officials said that the pilots last reported something at 11 P.M. local time when they were near the island of Fernando de Noronha. This is at about 1,5000 northeast of Rio de Janeiro, between the city of Natal and the island of Ilha do Sal.

President Nicolas Sarkozy said that he is deeply concerned, and he assured people that he will do the utmost to find the Airbus A330-200 plane. I remind you that the missing Air France flight AF447 was carrying 228 people aboard, and we surely hope that all of them are OK.

The Airbus A330-200 is considered one of the safest planes, and such aircraft didn’t have a fatal commercial flight crash. According to experts, the A330 shouldn’t go down in flight or when climbing to the flight route as accidents happen when landing or when planes take off. Also, the Air France didn’t have a fatal crash since July 2000 when a Concorde plane crashed, but the supersonic airplanes aren’t used for commercial flights anymore.

We will keep you updated with the Air France Flight AF447 status, and we hope that the passengers of the Airbus A330-200 will be found safe and alive.
